Final Project Musing

Five Things I learned:

Designing this final project has been a whole new world for me. As you know I am a Comm major not art major and this is my second design class ever.

1. I learned that designing was a lot harder than I thought, especially with type. Following a grid was something that was difficult for me because I felt as if I was being repetitive.

2. I learned that printers are a pain in the ass. I went in early Monday morning and they had me set up completely different files than I already had, then told me it would be done Wednesday. I told them I needed by 8:30am Tuesday and they compromised. I went in this morning and the cover and back cover had the white printed in purple. I about cried. They didn't know why it printed that way and it took four people to figure it out and get it fixed. I just got to class and it was still printed wrong.

3. I learned how to compile a large amount of information into a publication.

4. I learned how to use InDesign a lot better than I ever have before.

5. I learned about master designers and what kind of design I really enjoy.

Five Things I should Have Learned:

Aubree:
She used different paper weights and acetate which makes the publication much more interesting. I should have planned better what pages could have been used in a more unique way.

Kayla:
Kayla used a lot of texture in her book. It makes it more fun to go though and keeps me wondering what is next. She used like photographs to make her pages pop.

MJ:
I like how she demonstrated what not to do on some of her pages. They look weird and wonky but they have a purpose. The spacing in this book make me think more about that and how to use space in my future projects.

Bri:
Bri's book makes me think I should have been more expressive. It's not her normal uniform go to and you can tell she put alot of work into making it different from what she would usually do. I don't wanna be scared to go outside the box and break the rules.

Devin:
So I used white on black as well and now I see that that maybe wasn't the best idea for my publication.

Five things I refused to learn:

1. I think one thing was breaking the rules. I got so focused on doing everything correctly and by the book I didn't explore as much as I think I could have.

2. Another thing was not taking others advice. I feel like if Larry gave me advice I listened rather than trying out my own things.

3. I think I refused to explore my own style. I feel like I got inspiration from others rather than trying to find it within myself. That might be the COMM major in me.

4.  I think I went with safer types throughout this class. I want to explore more rather than use Helvetica and Avenir the whole time.

5. I refused to let my body make the design decisions. I think I over thought a lot of my designs.
